Career Centers

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) is the primary employment and training law that guides the investment of federal dollars in workforce development services. The Act which was passed by Congress in 1998 authorizes South Florida Workforce Investment Board to provide policy and strategic direction for the local publicly funded workforce system in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. The Act also established Career Centers as the central access point for a range of employment and training services. Youth Co-Op, Inc. operates three Career Centers in Miami-Dade and two Centers in Monroe County.

The goals of the Centers are to:

  • Assist unemployed individuals to find jobs

  • Prepare and secure employment for individuals who are on welfare and must transition into work, or who have not connected to the mainstream economy

  • Counsel and refer dislocated workers and disadvantaged adults to education and jobs

  • Work with employers to develop strategies for finding qualified employees, upgrading the skills of existing employees to fill higher level jobs, and to back-fill jobs that become available upon an individual’s promotion.

These goals are accomplished through a menu of free services accessible to all job seekers that include:

  • orientation to Career Center services

  • how to conduct self-directed job and training searches

  • multi-media Resource Library

  • on line job listings

  • on line listing of resume in Florida Job Bank

  • basic labor market information: occupational growth areas and wage rates

  • listing of government funded training incentives and programs

  • unemployment insurance and workers compensation laws

  • listings of education and training programs and resources

  • listings of human services programs and resources

  • procedures for registering for unemployment insurance

Career Centers also work with a variety of publicly funded training programs to provide determination of eligibility for training funds.

A parallel menu of services is provided to employers.
